Christmas Shopping Lists: What to Get Without Breaking the Bank

written by Rolayo Akhigbe December 17, 2019

Christmas is the season of giving. It is also a season of buying a lot of stuff that you might not need or like, but because everything is on sale, you just can’t let the opportunity pass you by. The moment November began, people started putting up Christmas decorations, and retailers and wholesalers started running Black Friday deals. There is so much to buy, and not enough time or money to buy all of it. You have to make some tough choices when it comes to your Christmas shopping list.

Making Your Christmas Shopping List

  • When getting gifts for people, determine what they like or love to do – What are your children’s hobbies? What kind of music does your mother like? Is your partner a wine or whisky person? One of the easiest ways of deciding what to buy for who is by figuring out what their interests are. This information will guide you when you go shopping.
  • Think outside the box concerning gifts – Toys and hampers are fine, but maybe you should go for something else this year, like a spa therapy kit, a trip to some exotic place within Nigeria, scented candles, or artsy tea mugs. When buying gifts for people, the thought behind it counts as well as the gift. Expensive doesn’t always count as the best.
  • Make a list before going to the store – Because of the many things that are on sale, people are prone to overspending or buying so much that they forget to buy what they actually need. To avoid this, make a list before you go to the store. If you are shopping online, make a list and place it beside your laptop as you shop.
  • Make a budget and stick to it – As you make your shopping list, make sure you set a budget and stick to it. With the budget in mind, you stand a better chance of sticking to your shopping list, and if, after a successful time of shopping, you realize some change left, you can reward yourself with a small treat.
  • Always remember that there is life after Christmas – Every year, people build-up to the Christmas season, and begin the New Year in a bad financial state, praying for the end of January to come quickly so that they can get paid. The problem begins with how much you spend during the festive season. Make sure that you have money saved for the period after the holidays so that you don’t go broke, waiting for January 31st.
