There is a book titled No Excuses! The Power of Self-Discipline, written by Brian Tracy. In this book, he talks in detail about self-discipline, and how it relates to our personal success, our business, and our finances. Reading this book opens your eyes to just how important self-discipline is in every sphere of life, be it your life at home or your life at work. If you don’t have self-discipline, you may well be on your way to failure.
But first, what is discipline?
Discipline is training to improve strength or self-control. Discipline is knowing what you want and being able to consistently do what is required to get what you want. Self-discipline is what keeps you on the right track in whatever you engage to do. Without self-discipline, you could take longer to reach your goals, or not even reach them at all.
- Becoming successful requires a great amount of self-discipline. You need to be disciplined to commit to the hard work, time and effort that success requires. Constant learning requires self-discipline. Constantly searching for ways to improve yourself requires self-discipline. When you are disciplined this way, success becomes your reality.
- Being responsible requires self-discipline. It is very easy to shift the blame to someone else, or to come up with an excuse for not doing what you were supposed to. When you are disciplined enough to take responsibility for your actions, you are in a better position to become a problem-solver. Accepting responsibility and taking prompt action to resolve issues makes you more efficient and effective, whether it is at home or in the workplace.
- Running a successful business requires self-discipline. Discipline makes you push through when normally you would fold up and close shop at the first sign of trouble. There are many challenges that you will face as a business owner, such as competition, scarcity, and tough customers. You need self-discipline to overcome these challenges and succeed in business. Identify your market and check out what the competition is doing. Be sure of the value you are giving your customers, and always ensure to put them first. With self-discipline, you can always stay ahead of the competition.
- For a number of us money requires the most self-discipline of all. Instant gratification, overspending, and living the good life appeals to each and every one of us, but how well can you afford that? How much have you saved? What have you invested in? Practicing self-discipline with your finances will ensure that you and your children, and even their children, will all live good lives.
- You require self-discipline to live a strife-free life. This may seem odd, but it is true. If you would rather hold grudges and get angry at the slightest things, you won’t be a very happy person, and this in turn will affect your relationships in all spheres of life. Decide to let offenses go. Decide not to hold grudges against people. Discipline yourself to live without strife, and happiness will follow.
Don’t forget, consistency is the key to seeing lasting results.
